Gerald was so overwhelmed by the enormity of things that people often thought he was on drugs.
“It’s just that there are so many people in the world. Almost seven billion. I can’t even wrap my mind around it. I mean, I’m just one person, and then you, and him, and her…then all the rest of the people in the building. And you add all the buildings together. I can’t fathom it.”
When Gerald spoke of such high numbers, his gestures grew round and oddly tiny.
“And then there’s the universe. 13.75 billion years old. That’s like, two people living right now for every year of the universe. What does it all mean?”
Gerald’s friends and family quickly learned to distract him with food offerings and video clips when he pondered vastness.
